Cruising Guides

Last summer, we cruised from Branford, CT down east to the coast the Maine.  We hadn't cruised to Maine since moving to Connecticut 30 years ago. We had onboard the latest Embassy Cruising Guide for New England to complement the Chartkit charts we had for the areas we were planning to visit. We would study our charts and the cruising guide the night before as we planned where we would spend the next night. We were able to cruise as far east as the Southwest Harbor area. It was on our way back as we were leaving Penobscot Bay, that we were looking for a different place to spend a predicted stormy night, that we saw on the chart a nice cove called Maple Juice Cove just west of Port Clyde.  The guide didn't even mention it and we suddenly realized the guide just detailed the harbors and marinas which were advertising in the guide.  We took a chance on Maple Juice Cove and enjoyed a safe and secure night in the company of two Outward Bound boats with their crews of teenagers.  Wanting to resolve the issue of missing other good harbors and being connected cruisers, we searched the internet for other cruising guides for Maine and found many recommendations for the Taft guide to the Maine coast.  We knew we had a 30+ year old hardback copy on the bookshelf back home which didn't do us much good. While in Boothbay, we found a bookstore which stocked the current soft cover copy of the Taft guide.  What a wonderful and comprehensive difference to our "commercial" guide. When we arrived home a comparison of the two versions found the new version definitely had been updated but was not substantially different from our 30 year old copy. Oh well.  The soft cover copy fits on the bookshelf in the boat better. Our recommendation is to cruise with multiple guides. A current copy commercial guide so you have a reliable listing of the marinas for fuel, water, provisions and pump out.  And a copy of a guide which provides the details of ALL the harbors on your charts. Happy Cruising.

I recall the Taft guide as being quite thorough.
