THE CATBOAT
ASSOCIATION
Founded 1962
Incorporated 1983
CATBOAT
ASSOCIATION, INC.
We receive many questions concerning the
Association, the most frequent being:
WHAT IS A CATBOAT?
A catboat is a boat traditionally fitted with a
gaff-rigged sail on a single mast set well up in the "eyes" of
the boat. Cruising catboats have cabins and normally range in overall
length from 16 - 26 feet. Others are fully or partially decked and
suitable for day sailing or camp cruising. Most cats have
centerboards, although some keel cats exist. Many cats have outboard or
"Barn Door" rudders but some cats are built with underslung
rudders. A few cats have Marconi sails, but most are gaff headed. Most
cats are shallow draft, broad beam boats. The classic Cape Cod Cat's beam
measurement is half the waterline length which makes a very stable boat.
But all cats have one basic characteristic; a single sail on a mast set
well up in the bow of the boat.
WHAT
IS THE CATBOAT ASSOCIATION?
The Catboat Association was founded August 18, 1962.
Its objectives are: to promote interest in cruising catboats, to exchange
information via a bulletin, to sponsor cruising and other catboat races,
and to research and preserve the historical aspects of the catboat for
educational purposes. Three Bulletins a year provide a means of
exchanging information on Association activities as well as on catboats in
general. The Membership Book and the schedule of Association
Rendezvous/Races are mailed with the Spring Issue.
The Annual (and Only) Meeting (other than
Race Rendezvous) of the Catboat Association is often held on a Saturday
early in February. The location of the meeting can vary. Recently, they
have been held at the Hyatt Regency Newport, Goat Island, Newport, RI.
Saturday is the formal meeting, however, many arrive the evening before
and stay over until Sunday. Workshops are held on Saturday and Sunday and
are scheduled around the main luncheon and speaker.
Membership is open to all owners of catboats
including decked and non-cruising types, and catboat enthusiasts. On
joining there is a one-time initiation fee of $30.00 plus dues of $ 20.00
for the remainder of the calendar year. New members joining during the
year are furnished with that year's bulletin and Membership Book. Further
dues are payable on January 1 of each year. Current Association
Membership is about 1650 with over 1400 catboats listed. The
Association Burgee as shown on the cover page is a white gaff rigged sail
on a field of blue. It was designed by the late Catboat Association member
Lois Darling and is a registered trademark of the Association.
WHO
MANAGES THE ASSOCIATION?
Essentially, The Catboat Association, as the late
John Killam Murphy once remarked, is: "a benevolent despotism."
However, due to our growth, it became necessary for the Association to
become incorporated as a "nonprofit Corporation." Other than
this, it is a pleasant, unstructured organization with simple by-laws (in
addition to the fact that there shall be no collisions nor complaints to
the race officials!). The Association does have a hard working group behind
it, all of volunteer status, who have been dubbed the STEERING COMMITTEE.
Some of the members of the Steering Committee have specific functions as
follows:
