Built by Manuel Swartz Roberts and launched from his Edgartown boatshop in 1929, VANITY is representative of the working catboats which once populated Vineyard waters.  With her small cabin and long, spacious cockpit, VANITY dutifully served her owner, Thomas Pease, as he fished for clams, quahogs, scup, bluefish and bay scallops in season.

Ownership was passed to Catboat Association Lifetime Member Oscar Pease (Thomas Pease's son) and VANITY remained active in Edgartown waters until the late 1980's.

Upon Oscar Pease's death in 1995, she was bequeathed to the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society, which seeks to restore and preserve her as a vital monument to the rugged, resourceful men and boats of an era now gone by.
